DIY Before & After Home Office Makeover
It’s time to reveal another room makeover from my home. AND, I couldn’t be happier with the way this home office makeover turned out!
I’ve wanted to add on to the built-ins in our office for a few years now. But, I decided other rooms in this house needed to be finished first.
Like the huge 2-story foyer makeover and beautiful family room makeover I finished last year. And, my husband has been working from home for the last 2 years. So, he was kind of in my way too!
That was until he decided to go back to England for 2 weeks to visit his parents. *touchdown dance*
While most normal wives would have enjoyed having the TV and house to themselves all day, I decided it was my chance to work my booty off for 2 weeks straight. That’s my idea of fun!
In that 2 weeks, I planned on ripping out the carpeting, installing tile, and updating the built-in cabinets in our home office.
Adding Middle and Upper Cabinets To The Ceiling
We have 10′ high ceilings that were just perfect for full floor to ceiling built-ins. I spent a few weeks planning the new layout so that these built-ins would actually be as functional as they are beautiful!
When I added the upper cabinets to the ceiling, I decided to just match them to the width of the openings below them. I hid the joint between the old and new cabinets with chair rail molding.
I designed the new middle cabinets to hold all the small things you find in an office; like, envelopes, copy paper, work folders, etc.
I’ll eventually install 4 shallow drawers into the middle openings on each side, for pens, staplers, stamps, etc.
I could have even built-in a desktop between the lower cabinets. But, my husband LOVES his desk. So, we’re keeping it…for now. 🙂
Beautiful Light Green Cabinets & White Walls
I used Magnolia Homes by Kilz paint color Americana Egg with an eggshell sheen on the office cabinets. It’s such a pretty color!
Every time I walk by this room now, I LOVE this color a little bit more. It’s so good!
To help the green paint on the cabinets really stand out, I painted the other walls and the crown moulding with Behr’s Polished Pearl in Eggshell. It’s a nice, warm white color.
I used Behr’s Vermont Cream in Eggshell on the ceiling. It’s a slightly brighter white than the walls. I use Eggshell Sheen on ceilings in most rooms now. It lightens and brightens any room!
DIY Chunky, 3-Layer Crown Molding
Check out that AMAZING 3-layer crown molding. To get this look, I removed the old 5 1/4″ crown, installed trim on the ceiling and wall, then reinstalled the original crown over that.
I am a HUGE fan of big crown molding or ceiling trim. You can see all of my DIY ceiling projects here.
I have to point out those LOVELY curtains too. The pattern is so pretty and the fabric looks expensive, but it’s actually a very affordable curtain. You can see them on Amazon here.
Adding Baseboard onto Cabinets
Toe kicks might be necessary on bathroom and kitchen cabinets that you always stand at. But they were pointless on these office cabinets.
So, I covered those old toe kicks with baseboard to give the built-ins a traditional, furniture design.

Installing New Tile
The carpet in this office was being absolutely destroyed by my husband sliding his roller chair on it. So, I knew we needed to switch to tile in this room.
This wood-look porcelain tile from Floor & Decor is gorgeous! It’s the same tile I used in our Before and After Family Room Makeover. Check out Are Large Tiles Harder To Install to see more about this tile.
That AMAZING area rug is from my list of the 17 Best Area Rugs on a Budget for your Floor. I bought it from Amazon, like most of my rugs.
This rug is surprisingly thick and well made for a large rug that’s so affordable. I absolutely LOVE it!
How Much Did This Home Office Remodel Cost?
So, I spent $1750 on this DIY Home Office Remodel. At $800, the tile flooring, thinset, and grout was the most expensive part of this room makeover.
BUT, since I DIY everything, I saved thousands from not having to hire a tile installer, finish carpenter, and painter.
