I love this easy DIY furniture redo, guys. Sometimes just finding a great paint color is all you need to completely transform your furniture.
Here’s the easy to follow steps for this beautiful furniture makeover using Magnolia Homes by Kilz Smoky Blue paint color Demo Day.
Easy DIY Furniture Redo
Take 1 beautiful paint color, add some pretty hardware and you can turn an ordinary piece of furniture into something beautiful and eye-catching. The painting part of this nightstand makeover is actually super easy, guys.
I have those easy steps below for you. BUT, this little nightstand has a pretty interesting backstory, if you’re into furniture makeovers and DIY projects.
This is the story of an old piece of furniture that’s had a lot of looks and jobs in my house. About 5 years ago, I found a simple 4-drawer dresser for $25 on Facebook. I painted it white and used it in a guest room for a while.
Then, one day, I decided to cut a dresser in half and turn it into our Powder Room Vanity and extra Toy Storage. Now, that extra toy storage is this beautiful new guest room nightstand.

Easy DIY Furniture Paint Makeover Steps
I’ll share some before pictures of all of the looks this nightstand has had after the quick steps for this easy DIY furniture redo. Be sure to check them out. This pieces has been through so many changes!
Step One
Start by cleaning your furniture with TSP or something similar to remove all built up dirt and oils. Follow the directions on the bottle to get the best result.
Step Two
Patch any damaged areas with wood filler or Bondo for larger wood damage. Then prepare the surface for new paint by lightly sanding the entire surface.
You want to smooth any imperfections and scuff the entire surface to make it easy for the new paint to grip on. I sanded the edges on those old paint stripes smooth too.
Now, wipe down the entire surface with a slightly damp cloth to remove all dust.

Step Three
Optional Step: If the old finish on your furniture is really shiny, or you just want to be extra careful, use my chalk paint recipe to turn this Kilz Latex Paint into Chalk Paint.
Adding a bit of Plaster of Paris to warm water, mixing, then adding the Demo Day Paint will make that Latex Paint stick to furniture like any other chalk paint. Apply 1 coat of the chalk paint mix. Then 1 coat of the unmixed paint to get the best color.
Step Four
If you don’t need to use chalk paint, then apply 2 coats of Magnolia Homes by Kilz Demo Day Paint Color, straight from the can. Use either the Interior Paint with the built in Primer or the Chalk Style Paint. Make sure to let it dry between coats.
To get a smooth finish, use a good nylon brush, foam brush, or foam roller to apply the paint.
Step Five
One last step for this easy DIY furniture redo. Add some beautiful new hardware. I used some brass and cream pulls I had. Here are some stunning cream and brass drawer pull options on Amazon.
That’s it! Easy, right? It just takes a little time to get a beautiful new look on your furniture with this Smoky Blue Paint Color.

Best Smoky Blue Paint Color
I love, love, love this color, guys. It’s the best Smoky Blue Paint Color on furniture and walls. I highly recommend it. In certain lighting this color has more of a smoky blue green look. It’s a gorgeous color!
You can see it on the DIY Outdoor Sofa from 2×4 Pine and Cedar I built. And, it’s on the DIY Nerf Gun Target I just made for my boys. I’m sure I’ll find another way to use it after this easy DIY furniture redo too. 🙂
That Magnolia Homes line of paint is a new favorite. I’ve used at least 6 of the colors so far. I keep buying it because the colors are rich, it has great coverage with just 1 coat, and it dries and cures a lot like Chalk Paint, even though I buy the Interior Paint version.
You can find stores that sell it near you on the Magnolia Homes by Kilz website or try your local Ace Hardware. They usually have it.
What about the top of that DIY Night Stand Makeover???
You can paint the top of your furniture using those easy DIY furniture redo steps above. Just make sure to let it cure for a week before putting anything heavy on it.
I felt like experimenting a bit. So, I made a Cedar DIY Mosaic Wood Top for that Nightstand.

A Look At the Before Photos
As promised, here are pictures of the life of this dresser turned vanity, toy storage, and now, guest room nightstand. Which is your favorite look or style?
