Here’s the steps for this beautiful DIY Night Stand Makeover with Magnolia Homes by Kilz Paint color Demo Day.
Take 1 beautiful paint color, add some pretty hardware and you can turn an ordinary piece of furniture into something beautiful and eye-catching. The painting part of this DIY Night Stand Makeover is actually super easy, guys. I have those easy steps below for you. BUT, this little Night Stand has a pretty interesting backstory, if you’re into furniture makeovers and DIY. 🙂
This is the story of an old piece of furniture that’s had a lot of looks and jobs in my house. About 5 years ago, I found a simple 4-drawer dresser for $25 on Facebook. I painted it white and used it in a guest room for a while. Then, one day, I decided to cut a dresser in half and turn it into our Powder Room Vanity and extra Toy Storage. Now, that extra toy storage is this beautiful new guest room Night Stand.
I’ll share some pictures of all of those looks after the quick steps for this DIY Night Stand Makeover. And, one more thing, I’m sharing this DIY as part of a bunch of new Update with Paint Makeover Projects with some of my very talented blogger friends. You can find the link to all of their projects at the end of this tutorial.
Here’s What You’ll Need
- TSP to clean the furniture
- Optional: Wood Filler or Bondo and Medium Grit Sanding Block
- Fine Grit Sanding Block
- Clean Shop Rag or Cloth
- A Good Nylon Paint Brush
- Magnolia Homes by Kilz paint in color Demo Day – Eggshell Sheen
Steps to Do This Furniture Paint Makeover At Home
Start by cleaning your furniture with TSP or something similar to remove all built up dirt and oils. Follow the directions on the bottle to get the best result.
Patch any damaged areas with wood filler or Bondo for larger wood damage. Then prepare the surface for new paint by lightly sanding the entire surface. You want to smooth any imperfections and scuff the entire surface to make it easy for the new paint to grip on. I sanded the edges on those old paint stripes smooth too.
Now, wipe down the entire surface with a slightly damp cloth to remove all dust.
Optional Step: If the old finish on your furniture is really shiny, or you just want to be extra careful, use my chalk paint recipe to turn this Kilz Latex Paint into Chalk Paint. Adding a bit of Plaster of Paris to warm water, mixing, then adding the Demo Day Paint will make that Latex Paint stick to furniture like any other chalk paint. Apply 1 coat of the chalk paint mix. Then 1 coat of the unmixed paint to get the best color.
If you don’t need the chalk paint, apply 2 to 3 coats of Magnolia Homes by Kilz Demo Day, straight from the can. Make sure to let it dry between coats. I love, love, love this color, guys. You can see it on the DIY Outdoor Sofa from 2×4 and Cedar I built and that DIY Nerf Gun Target I just made for my boys. I’m sure I’ll find another way to use it after this DIY Night Stand Makeover too. 🙂
That Magnolia Homes line of paint is a new favorite. I’ve used at least 6 of the colors so far. I keep buying it because the colors are rich and it dries and cures a lot like Chalk Paint, even though I buy the Latex version. You can find stores that sell it near you on the Magnolia Homes by Kilz website or try your local Ace Hardware. They usually have it.
Now, add some beautiful new hardware. I used some brass and cream pulls I had. Here are some stunning cream and brass drawer pull options on Amazon. That’s it! Easy, right? It just takes a little time to get this beautiful DIY Night Stand Makeover look on your furniture. 🙂
What about the top of that DIY Night Stand Makeover???
You can paint the top of your furniture. Just make sure to let it cure for a week before putting anything heavy on it. I felt like experimenting a bit. So, I made a Cedar Wood Mosaic Top for that Nightstand. You can see exactly how I made that wooden top in this video.
