You have to love a Mason Jar Planter Box that is this easy and quick to make. Best of all this beautiful bit of home decor costs just $6.50 to make. And for $7 more you can add the mason jars and mini LED lights. Yea!
This Mason Jar Planter Box is a quick and simple build for power tool beginners. You only need to make simple, straight cuts. Yea, again! I used my miter saw for this project, but you can use a jigsaw or circular saw too. You can cut, assemble, patch, sand, and stain 1 in less than 2 hours. AND part of that time is just waiting for the hole filler and stain to dry. Give it a couple more hours and you’ll be ready to put a coat of my favorite polyurethane on too.
These planter boxes are a versatile home decor All-Star. You can use it as a dining table centerpiece, vanity organizer, window planter, mantle decor, veggie or fruit storage, picnic caddy, craft supply box, and much much more. They also make great gifts your friends and family will find a dozen uses for too.
BUT what makes this DIY project really awesome is it’s so easy to make a lot of these at once. You can make 6 to 12 of them in about 2 hours. So, if you need a bunch of gifts for Christmas or as shower prizes, here you go. Having some friends over for a craft party? Teens and adults will love decorating these. Want a gorgeous wedding centerpiece for less than $15? This is it. Looking for a quick and low cost DIY to sell at a craft fair or online? You can DIY 1 of these boxes for as low as $6.50. *Happy Dance Time* I told you, you have to love this DIY Mason Jar Planter Box.

Materials for 1 DIY Mason Jar Planter Box
- 1 – 17″ long 1″ x 6″ board
- 2 – 17″ long 1″ x 4″ boards
- 2 – 4 1/4″ long 1″ x 6″ boards
- 5 of these 16 oz. Ball Mason Jars (you can get these pretty cheap at WalMart too)
- 1 of these LED mini lights (prices vary, so check similar listings for the best deal)

I attached the bottom to the sides, then flipped it over to glue and nail one edge on.
Directions to Make this DIY Mason Jar Planter Box
- Make your cuts using the measurements above.
- Sand the pieces with a fine grit, like 120. This’ll prepare the wood for stain, remove oils and dirt, and smooth out any rough spots.
- Use the 17″ long 1″ x 6″ piece as a base. The 17″ long 1″ x 4″ pieces sit on top of this piece. But it’s a bit easier to assemble this part upside down. So, set the sides on edge on a level surface. Apply glue to each side, then carefully attach the bottom. Make sure it’s square and even on each side.
- Then use your brad nailer OR wire nails (this set is a fantastic deal) and hammer to put 3 1 1/4″ nails along each side. If you have clamps, they’d help keep everything in place while you hammer. If not, you can use a drill to make small pilot holes before hammering. You just want to keep the pieces from shifting under the movement of the hammer.
- Now you can attach the front and back pieces using the same glue and nail method you used for the side. I would use 4 nails on each end, near the corners.
- Wipe away any excess glue with a slightly damp cloth.
- Patch any holes with wood filler. If you used a brad nailer, like me, they can occasionally go a bit crazy and pop out of unexpected places. No need to panic. Snip the exposed end of the nail off with wire cutters (I’ve had this one for eons), use a nail set to hammer the tip into the wood, then patch with wood filler.
- Let the glue and wood filler dry per instructions on the products.
- Sand down patched areas and all edges with that 120 grit paper again.
- Wipe off dust once everything is sanded.
- Apply your favorite stain or paint. I used Rust-oleum’s Driftwood. Let dry before applying a second coat, if needed.
- After that dries, apply polyurethane.

Sanding the sharp edges off gives the box a more finished look.
Decorate this DIY Mason Jar Planter Box
I added 5 16oz. Mason Jars to this Planter box, then wrapped the LED mini lights around the outside of the jars. Then pop in your favorite faux or fresh flowers. I grabbed mine at Cost Plus World Market. So easy, right?
You can really decorate this DIY Mason Jar Planter Box a million ways. But, if you’re using the lights, I wouldn’t paint the jars. That’ll block those pretty lights.
